Learn About Planting Flower Bulbs

Bulb Gardens

Flower bulbs are great because they require very little care and once planted, you get many years of great blooms and flowers. They even often easily multiply and you can move them around your yard to spread the great flowers or give them to neighbors. Great curb appeal is another fantastic benefit of iris bulbs. Iris bulbs for sale are available online along with lily bulbs for sale.

Some kinds of bulbs need shade, while others want full sun. No matter what conditions your garden has, you are sure to discover the perfect bulb to plant. A couple of my favorites are iris bulbs and lily bulbs. These are some of the most popular bulbs due to their brilliant colors and size of blooms.

Bulbs are usually planted in fall or spring. Different bulbs have different planting instructions so be sure to check what they are before purchasing your flowers. When planting bulbs in the fall, they have more time to get established before winter so they can get a good start in the spring. Certain bulbs may not bloom the first year if planted in spring, but there are still a great deal of bulbs that can be planted in spring and bloom the first year with great results.

If deer are a problem in your area, be sure to plants things that they will not eat. All too many times I have planted flowers that the deer eat only to be disappointed when it happens. The package on the outside will tell you if deer might eat the bulbs.

Order bulbs from a quality company as quality is very important when purchasing your plants. Lily bulbs for sale are often a favorite along with iris bulbs for sale. They should be fresh and robust. The good thing about ordering online is that the selection is so great. The flower bulbs are sent straight to your door at the best time for planting.

A Grand Plan

modern garden furniture

I woke up this morning with the desire to make a design board for each of my rooms, hoping that the board would help organize my decorating ideas. While I like the idea of buying spontaneous decorations and accessories, I also want my rooms to look polished and carefully decorated. My friend Melissa might say this is due to my being a Capricorn. And a as a Capricorn, I must have a plan! So, I have narrowed down my room designing to 3 steps. Hope this helps!

Pick A Theme

One of the easiest ways to begin planning your room is to pick a theme for your room. The theme narrows your decorating focus. Below are a few theme ideas:

1. A Period Theme
-Medieval
-Gothic
-Victorian
-Colonial
-1950s or any other decade

2. A Regional/Cultural Theme
-French/Spanish/Tuscan
-Coastal/Tropical
-Mountain Lodge
-Country
-Asian Inspired
-Western style

3. Select a Focal Object
-Favorite piece of artwork
-Favorite flowers/veggies/herbs
-Seashells/Lighthouses

4. Colors
Maybe you simply want to base your room around a certain color or colors. Pick either your favorite colors or use colors to create a particular mood:
Green: earthy, organic, natural
Blue: calming, tranquil, peaceful
Purple: mysterious, luxurious
Red: modern, sexy, spicy, exciting
Orange: excitement, enthusiasm
Yellow: light, airy, fresh, happy
Pink: cute, quaint
Black and White: chic, sophisticated

Identify the Feel of the Room

Now that you have a general idea about the theme/colors for your room, make a list of words that you feel should describe your finished room. Should it be calm and soothing? Or sexy and modern? Victorian and earthy? Sophisticated and chic? The main idea is that you should begin to envision how you want to feel when you spend time in your room, and doing so will help clarify your project. For example, if you want to decorate a room using a coastal/tropical theme, do you want your room to feel like a beach party, a nautical boat, or a serene beach retreat?

Identify Relevant Materials

Based on your theme and descriptive word list, what decorating materials would best convey your theme? For example, if you want to decorate with a Victorian theme, then you may want to incorporate silk, pearls, lace, wrought iron, dark woods, and flowers. Or, if you select a Tuscan theme, why not decorate with wine bottles, stone materials, vines, and terra cotta? Make a list of the materials that would bring out your theme, and then keep them in mind as you look for paint, furniture, and decorations.

And be creative! If you want to create a herb inspired kitchen, then think of unique items to decorate with. Instead of buying a vase for your kitchen table, buy a small planter. Paint it your desired color, tie a ribbon around it (or simply glue one if you don’t want the bow) and plant a flowering herb.

To visualize your room, it is helpful to make a design board.  There are several ways that you can make one.  First, you can cut out pictures in magazines and tape them into a notebook or binder.  Second, you can table pictures, fabric, paint chips, and other items to a corkboard.  Or, you can create a board from pictures you collect online and use a site like Mosaic Maker.  Here is one I created for my office/lounge that I made on Mosaic Maker:

Clockwise from top left: 1. Pillow from Target 2. Vase Sconce from Bed Bath and Beyond 3. Picture from BizBash 4. Sandalwood Fan from Favors by Serendipity 5. The Garden Room Picture from Ivan About Town 6. Purple Flowers from Photos of the Year 7. Modern Victorian Room from Homes Magazine 8. Tea light Chandelier from Country Styled Homes 9. Green Throw from Overstock.com 10. Asian Retro 11. Sheer Ceiling from HGTV 12. Purple Vase from LunaBazaar 13. Green and Champagne Room from Woman’s Day

My theme is “Mystical Victorian”.  I wanted my room to feel elegant, victorian yet modern, earthy, and mystical.  I decided on the colors: green and gold with accents of purple and dusty rose.  I paln to use lots of silky fabric, lace, pearls, wrought iron, and dark woods.

Now that you have an idea for how to plan, here is a starter list of items to obtain for your rooms:

1. Paint/Wall Treatment

2. Wall Art

3. Window Treatments

4. Rugs

5. Lighting

6. Storage

7. Furniture

8. Decorations and Accessories

9. Kitchen Utensils/Dinnerware

Happy Decorating!

Fall Gardening Checklist

Bulb Gardens

As summer dwindles, many homeowners find their gardens looking a bit drab. The once perky flowers and borders are showing signs of passing on, and the coming cooler temperatures with shorter days signal to many plants the end of the growing season. Properly preparing the garden for fall plants and vegetables is essential for a successful autumn garden or harvest. The following is a list of things to do in the garden once summer ends and falls begins. Use it for reference when planning your fall gardening schedule.

Select Cool Season Flowers, Plants and Vegetables

Before you even put on the gardening gloves, you must have an idea of what plants will be going in the fall garden. There are many different flowers and vegetables to choose from that do well and thrive in the fall months. Choose plants that are frost hardy to some degree, expecially if you live in a colder climate where the fall months are known to be chilly.

Cool seaon vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, lettuce, spinach and cabbage are excellent choices for a autumn harvest. A productive fall vegetable garden begins at the end of summer. Plan to plant seeds in the beginning of August to ensure a bountiful harvest. Quick maturing vegetables can be planted in September. Know the dates of maturation for all the vegetables you plan to plant and plant them accordingly so as to avoid the first hard frost.

Flowers such as Sedum Autumn Joy and Chrysanthemums are traditional fall flowers that are quite popular in many different landscapes and gardens. The wildflower goldenrod, as well as daisies and sunflowers are all additional suitable choices for a fall flower garden or landscape.

Prepare the Garden Site

For an effective fall display, spent summer blooms must be properly pruned and disposed of. Annuals can be removed completely. Remove the summer crop residue and any outlying weed growth in the area. Till the soil for vegetables and spade about 6 or so inches. Add a few pounds of fresh fertilizer to the soil. Select a site for the fall plants and blooms, making sure that the area will receive adequate sunlight during the day.

A cool, moist soil is important for the growth of many vegetables. However, the summer sun can dry out soil, making it hard and crusty. If this is the case in your region, be prepared to cover the soil with burlap or mulch to help keep the ground cool after seeding allowing for more favorable germination to occur. Light shading can be helpful in keeping the ground cooler for flower and plant transplants as well.

Sow Seeds and/or Prepare for Transplants

After the site has been prepared, sow seeds directly into the soil. Be sure to do this early enough to allow for germination and a successful harvest. Check with your local gardening center for tips on planting dates in your region. Transplants should be planted according to each plant’s needs, and adequate spacing should be applied for those expecting more abundant growth. Your local gardening center can be an excellent source of information on what grows best in your area and how best to care for it to ensure the plant thrives.

Consider planting a few spring bulbs during this time as well. Tulips and daffodils are popular bulbs commonly planted in the fall in preparation for spring.

The International Flower Bulb Centre joined with The Gardening Club at The Roof Gardens in Kensington for a bulb potting extravaganza! David Lewis, Head Gardener at The Roof Gardens, took the workshop, and invited guests to get their hands dirty and create colourful and decorative arrangements of spring flowering bulbs in pots which are a great way to brighten up the home or garden.

Outdoor Garden Shed Plans

gardening tool reviews

Article by B. Rowland

My husband likes to “tinker” and he has all these tools, equipment and work benches that takes up just about all the garage. Then there is my hobby. I love to garden and I have my gardening benches, gardening tools, flower pots, bags of soil and mulch, etc.,etc.,etc. Between “his stuff” and “my stuff”, and all of the holiday decorations that we have in boxes stacked up in the garage, there is no longer any room for our cars. We have to do something, we either have to get rid of something or find more storage space. Neither one of us were willing to get rid of anything so we decided to look at some outdoor garden shed plans to move all my gardening stuff to. I was very excited.

We got online and actually found some free outdoor garden shed plans. But after more research we found out that the free shed plans didn’t have all the information that a good set of professional designed plans had and they were not very expensive. It was a “no-brainer”, we decided on a set of plans and made our purchase. We actually went for a shed that was larger than we actually needed, but it will give me more space to work in if weather is bad and we will have more storage space.

One of the things my husband didn’t even think about until he started reviewing the instructions was the load capacity for the roof. We get a lot of snow every winter and know the damage it can cause if you have a flat roof where snow can accumulate. The weight of the snow could cause your roof to collapse.

Security is another factor to consider, specially if your storage shed will be located away from your house or if it’s located behind your garage where you can’t see it. You may want to consider putting bars on the windows, security lights on the outside and absolutely a good heavy door with a bolt action lock. Maybe you think some of this is over kill, you just have to decide if it is necessary in your neighborhood.

With any structure that you build, it is better to use pressure treated wood. It is a little more expensive, but it will last far longer than untreated wood. Also, when you are ready to paint your new outdoor garden shed, spend a little more money for a good quality primer and exterior latex enamel paint. The finish will last longer and be easier to keep clean. After all, you want your investment to last a long time.

An outdoor garden shed is a great investment. But if you are going to build it yourself, then get a good set of Outdoor Garden Shed Plans. They will more than pay for themselves by saving you time, money and frustration.

Every Perennial Needs Love Sweet Love

Perennial Gardens

Watering is a Must

The best way to water perennials is with a soaker hose.  The soft stems may bend if they’re watered from above with a regular garden sprinkler.  Give them about 1 inch of water per week.  Correct watering can make the difference between a good flower display and a poor one.  The heat outside during the summer is a killer. (At least here in Texas it is).  Don’t rely on summer rainfall to do the job, just water on a regular schedule.  Water perennials throughout the growing season, particularly during dry weather.  Allow the water to penetrate deeply into the soil; moisten the entire bed thoroughly, but do not water so heavily that the soil become soggy.  Water again when the soil is dry to the touch and the tips of the plant wilt slightly at midday.

Ways you can Water

I use a soaker hose, which is excellent for watering perennial beds.  Water from the soaker hose seeps directly into the soil without any waste.  the slow moving water does not disturb the soil or reduce its capacity to absorb water.

If you do water with a sprinkler, use one that oscillates.  This covers a large area with rainlike drops of water.  Do not use a rotating sprinkler, as I’ve found that it tends to tear up the surface of my soil, and only covers a small area anyway.  Run your sprinkler at least 4 hours in each place.  This deep watering will do the job and quench their thirst, and all for a longer interval between waterings.  (Don’t want that water bill to get too high!!).

To tell you the truth, I’ve found that the least effective method for watering is the hand held nozzle or watering can.  Watering with a nozzle has all the disadvantages of watering with a rotating sprinkler.  In addition, gardeners seldom are patient enough to do a thorough job of watering with a nozzle; not enough water is applied and the water that is applied is usually poorly distributed over the bed.

When to Water

It’s been so hot here in Texas that I’ve been watering in the early mornings, and then I check my plants during the day, because at 100* outside it just drains my plants of life.  I also water in the evenings some.  You can water anytime during the day except for late afternoon.  Even water in bright sunlight; just make sure you soak the soil thoroughly.  If possible, water in the early part of the day; this will allow plenty of time for the flowers and foliage to dry before night.  Night watering will increase the chances of disease.  Finally, be careful when watering flowers in bloom; the flowers tend to rot if they catch and hold water.  You may want to give such plants a little shake after watering to dislodge some of the drops.

Follow these tips and you will have beautiful Perennials this year.   I love my garden and attempt to get the most out of my hobby with these plants.  You too can have a beautiful flowers garden this year with a little work and a little watering at the right times.   Please see more of my articles on many topics as everyone can learn something new, no matter what the age.
