Ferns should be placed under low light or moderate sunlight, which would provide filtered or indirect sheer drapes. East or north facing windows would be the best place in this regard.
While ferns are basically tropical plants, they are likely to breed best in very cool temperature ranging from 65 to 75F during the day and 50 to 70F during night. Humidity is most preferred for some varieties. However, these plants should not be overheated, as it would lead to a sad demise. Ferns require adequate watering, but it should be frequent and light to ensure that they thrive and do not die off. Overwatering the ferns can also lead to frequent
problems.

Ways to get Your Garden Ready For Fall Months

Article by tabosngi jud
The earliest clues of autumn are visible in our neighbourhood. Autumn always has its appeal but many things that were cultivated during the spring and the summer are lost. However, we have the ability to grow some plants that are going to last until the early days of winter.
As soon as leaves start to come down and flowers begin to diminish it’s a sign to start doing things. Those are the first evidence of the autumn, so you have to prepare the garden for the cold season. All that is now growing in your garden will need help to see them through till the springtime warmth arrives. Here are several useful ideas that would help you to prepare the garden for the autumn.
If you have a large garden with many trees, you must be certain they are cut and ready for the cold season. You just need a pair of garden shears with which to cut off the lifeless growth. The reason behind this is to allow sunlight to reach the healthy branches and sustain life. While it is thought you can make natural fertilizer using dead leaves, this is not entirely true. Leaves could be infected with a disease which afterwards will negatively impact the soil.
Nourish the earth using potassium fertilizers. The plants are going to be shielded against the cold of winter by the enveloping layer. Keep in mind that some spring flowers call for planting now. New fertilizer should be laid down after getting rid of any old layers. You must ensure when you cover the soil with dead leaves that they are not infected and distribute them uniformly.
The best time meant for sowing evergreens is at the beginning of October. Irrigate the soil a couple of days before planting. After you have planted any bulbs it’s essential to water them, but you should not overdo it. Take care to consider the weather, given that watering just before heavy rain will not only be a waste of time and water but also present a threat to your plants.
One more thing you must do in autumn is till the soil. Digging to a depth of 15 to 20 centimetres can be optimal. Before you decide to tackle this job, you must get rid of any vegetation such as fruits and leaves from the soil. Whenever the leaves or fruits are healthy, don’t burn them seeing that they can make a great natural fertilizer for the soil.
Remember about your grass. If you want to set it for winter, you will need to cut the lawn as short as it can be. Sustain it’s overall health by feeding it with fertilizers formulated specially for lawns.
It might be easier to do all these tasks and move plants around if you leave garden implements out during October, which is the best month for these activities. An overlaying of foil is just the thing to counteract your heat-loving decorative plants from freezing. Only two layers of foil usually are enough, depending on the measurements the plant. The glow reflected by snow is very harsh, so give protection to especially the younger plants by painting their bottom sections.
Solar Garden Lights Are a Perfect Landscaping Tool

Your garden, deck and patio look great, but wouldn’t it be great to add some “atmosphere”, and that safe intimate feeling you long for at the end of a long summer night. Solar Garden Lights are the thing you need. It is adding to the feeling of relaxation on your property and definitely is a simple way to increase security. There is no hassle with wiring and you can place and rearrange them whenever you want.
Outdoor Lights are perfect to underline special nuances in your garden like a special herb patch, an ornament or even as underwater light in the pond. As such these simple little solar lights are a much underestimated part of our landscaping toolbox. They make sure your natural masterpiece is creatively showcased. Solar garden Lights are usually depending on LED as their “light bulb”. And LED is a semiconductor, and has the advantage of very high efficiency rates compared to conventional light bulbs.
This technique has been in existence for decades but until recently the end result was poor or cold light at a very high price. This has completely changed, making the LED a great item to use in your garden design efforts.
Easy to Place no Wiring to Worry about
The major advantage of solar power as energy source is that you don’t have to worry about wiring and added energy costs. It’s a green solution and a convenient one. Just place them where you need them and let the sun do its job. Of course they need as much sun as possible, like a sun loving plant they need full sun to be at their best. Their little build in solar panels (photovoltaic cells) take up the suns energy to charge the battery of the lamp during daylight hours.
Your lights are now using the same energy source as do your plants, shrubs and trees.
The landscaping with solar outdoor lights is real enjoyment. Their fixtures are sometimes designed to resemble stones, so they look like a natural part of your garden. So you can use them if you are creating a rock garden or Zen space in your backyard. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
Solar garden appliances are great, and not limited to lighting either. Having a pump running on the suns energy to make an energy neutral water garden. And we see garden ornaments in all shapes sizes hitting the market these days.
You can build your own small fences to protect your garden from quality wood, and there are pathway garden lighting supplies that you can purchase for your yard space that will make your garden much more appealing. Solar light is low voltage, and can always be used for your garden without the risks other lamps can carry.
Solar Garden Lights are coming of age they add comfort, safety and atmosphere, without high maintenance costs, potential electrical hazards and installation problems.

These summer blooming bulbs bring more color to your garden just as the flowering bulbs of spring are starting to die off.

Dahlia – These flowering bulbs develop plants that range from 2 to 8 feet tall with flowers ranging from eight to twelve inches wide during the months of July through October. The flowers have an assortment of colors except for the color blue. The smaller version of this flower is usually used as bedding plants. They generally bloom in late summer and into the fall. They do their best if you plant them in groups and are excellent as cut flowers; they also work well in containers. If you deadhead the blooms that have faded you can have a steady period of blooms. How to Grow the Best Fall Garden

Article by Nancy May
Late August and early September is the time of year where vacations are ending and kids are heading back to school. Just because outdoor activities are dwindling down doesn’t mean you can’t continue tending to your garden and home landscaping. Fall is the garden’s most forgotten season. In most North American gardens, the fall is an underused season for gardening. By planting a fall garden, you take advantage of this beautiful season and can enjoy your garden a little longer. We spend so much time creating beauty from spring’s first flowers throughout the summer we often forget to reap the rewards during the fall. Whether you want to plant vegetation or shrubbery and flowers, there are some wonderful plants and vegetation that put on their best show between August and October.
The fall is a great time to grow some cool season vegetables. Typically, vegetables that grow best in cool weather are leafy greens, root crops and various members of the cabbage family. Beets, carrots, peas, turnips, radishes, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts may be planted in early August for fall harvesting. Some of them will even tolerate light frosts. These are wonderful vegetables to grow this time of year, and taste so much better than store bought produce. Plant a fall garden and enjoy homegrown veggies into the cooler months of the year.
Fall is a satisfying time of the year for the perennial gardener. There are still a good 6 to 8 weeks of beautiful fall gardens ahead. Perennials that drooped and faded in the heat of summer may re-bloom, and the fall-blooming plants are in their full glory. Go for colors that complement the falling leaves. Try some of the many perennials (begonias or goldenrods), annuals (mums) and shrubs (Sumac or Fothergilla) that shine against the spectacular backdrop of the changing seasons. Choose bright gold or orange or even red perennials. These will typically bloom until the first frost of the season.
During the fall, it is time to begin thinking about winter and preparing your perennial beds accordingly. There are a number of cleanup and winter preparation chores that you should perform. As fall progresses you will want to start clearing leaves out of your gardening beds. If left to mat down thickly they may create conditions that cause root rot. You can use the shredded leaves to mulch your garden. Also, early October is a good time to prune back herbaceous plants that will be killed to the ground with the first frost.
Take advantage of the cool months after summer to beautify your garden or landscaping for fall and prepare it for a cold winter. The more tending you are to your gardening year-round the more effortless it looks with each passing season.
Pruning & Planting on Tap for Southern California Gardeners in November

Article by Bill Camarillo
Cooler November weather in Southern California makes it the ideal time to plant over a dozen varieties vegetables while also pruning trees for a healthier, fuller look in spring.
Plant A Cool Weather Garden: A fall vegetable garden can be just as rewarding as a summer garden. Vegetable seeds to plant in November include beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, collards, endive, favas, Kale, lettuce, mustard, parsley, parsnip, peas, radish, rutabaga, spinach, Swiss chard and turnips. Onion varieties that do well in cool weather are Grano, Granex, Imperial Sweet and Crystal Wax. The onion stalk with grow in winter with the bulb growing when the weather warms.
Strawberries in Winter: Check with your local nursery for available strawberry plants. Make sure the plants get plenty of sun and are located in well-draining soil, ideally in raised beds. Place them about one foot apart. Lay mulch around the plants to prevent weeds from sprouting after winter rains.
Break Up Perennials: Now is the time to divide and plant perennials so their offshoots will have time to establish themselves for spring flowers. Perennials can look unkempt with dead areas in the middle if they are not divided. They also produce fewer flowers when left to grow wild. Dig up the roots and divide them. Perennials are hardy plants and can withstand the trauma. Chrysanthemums can also be broken up and divided once they stop flowering and are trimmed back. They will flower again in March.
Prune Trees: Start pruning a tree by first removing dead or damaged branches. Remove smaller branches that are overlapping larger branches. Also remove stems that grow straight up from the trunk or large branches. Cut lower stems that grow from the base of the tree and any stems that appear to be growing next to the tree. When cutting healthy stems or branches, save branches that are growing the straightest and highest up the trunk Make pruning cuts as close to the trunk as possible. This helps the tree close the exposed area and reduces the chance of disease or attracting bugs. Never leave a portion of the cut stem or branch on the tree.
Plant Spring-Flowering Bulbs: Plant spring-flowering bulbs that don’t require chilling throughout November. These bulbs include daffodils, grape hyacinth, Dutch Iris, ornamental onions, Spanish bluebells, ranuculus, gladiolus and freesias. Plant bulbs with the pointy end down in soil three times the depth of the bulb. Water right after planting. If we have a dry winter, water as needed.
Plant Native Plants and Wildflowers: November is the time to plant native plants and wildflowers. Although drought resistant, they will need water to help get started. Wildflowers include California poppies, larkspur, linaeria and gypsophila. California native plants that do well are Mariposa lily, California Morning Glory, White Bark California Lilac, California Juniper, California Evening Primrose, Purple Sage and California Holly.

No Light: No Life

I have recently thought much of the influence and importance of light to sustain life. This year I did something I’ve never done before; I planted a garden in my backyard. The greater part of my two acre lot is covered with trees, mostly pine trees. But, I found a small open patch that is exposed to the sun for about six hours. We are now harvesting the fruit of our labor. We have squash, pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, beans, etc. But some of the vegetables close to the ground are covered by a canopy of leaves. With little sunlight they are rotting on the vine. They are starving for light and without light there is no life in the garden.
Light is crucial to life. John wrote about Jesus when he said, “In him is life and that life was the light of men.” (John 1:4) Light chases confusion away. The previous verse says, “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (v.3) Jesus Christ is the creator. The book of Genesis teaches us that the world was without form and void and a deep darkness covered the earth. God chased away the darkness when he said, “Let there be light.” The light brought order and beauty out of confusion and chaos. When Jesus declares that he is the “light of the world” he is presenting himself as the source of order and beauty in a world floundering about in dark confusion.
Light brings security. My five year old son sleeps in his own bedroom. He has a night light beside his bed but he is not satisfied with that small amount of light. He wants the hall light on. He wants lots of light to chase away the darkness in his room. He is troubled without the light and refuses to sleep if it isn’t on. Christ, as light of the world, provides us with the security we long for. The light gives us confidence, it dispels fear. It illuminates so that we can see what is and is not there.
We were having a plumbing problem some months ago in one of our bathrooms. I reached behind the toilet to shut off the water valve and the valve came off in my hand. Water was spewing everywhere and I had no way to turn in off. I ran out into the dark night to find the main that provides water to my home. I lifted the lid and started to put my hand down into the dark hole but had second thoughts. I dashed for a flash light and returned to the valve. When I flooded the valve with the light of the flashlight I saw a huge spider web supporting a fat black widow. The light revealed a danger I couldn’t see without it. Jesus Christ is the light that exposes those things that can endanger our spiritual lives. Jesus is the light that “shines in darkness.” (John 1:5)
Many evenings I look westward and watch the sun set beyond the Chattahoochee River over the plains of central Alabama. The darkness slowly overtakes my wooded neighborhood as night settles in. Unlike the physical light of the world, spiritual light cannot be overcome by spiritual darkness. “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.” It would be like organizing the world’s population to shoot squirt guns at the sun. The attempts of simple-minded men to extinguish the truth of Christ are just as absurd. Many are frustrated in their efforts and as a last resort simply declare that God no longer exists. Their chest-pounding declaration does nothing to change the fact that the Light shines eternally.
This Light was sent into the world to reveal Truth. We know God by knowing Jesus Christ. Our great separation from God makes his glorious beauty and power incomprehensible. To see his glory would bring instant death to vile creatures such as us. So, God sent his Son to reveal himself to us. “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.” (John 14:7)
Christ taught his disciples that he was the light of the world as long as he was with them in the world. “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you.” (John 12:35) So how is the darkness dispelled after the Light is no longer with us? Christ taught his disciple that they “were the light of the world.” (Matt. 5:14) When physical darkness envelops the earth God provides the moon which reflects the light of the sun. We are to be spiritual bodies which reflect the light of His Son.
The world offers only darkness in the culture it provides. Men’s hearts seek satisfaction through entertainments provided by new technology and old pastimes. But satisfaction cannot be found outside of the true light of Jesus Christ. Many in our lives will never see the light if they do not see it reflected in our lives. Is the light of Christ being reflected through you to your friends and family? Many live in a dungeon of darkness where one single ray of light will make all the difference. When the source of that reflected ray of light is Jesus Christ wonderful things can happen, chains can fall off, light can flood the darkest parts of the heart and souls can be set free!
